London based singer-songwriter Mark Mathews has been making quite the name for himself in recent times. He achieved 1st place in the Indie International Song Writing competition, been nominated for 2 Indy Music Awards for best live act and voted as one of the best artists in London by readers of the Metro.
He performs his material solo as well as with his band ‘Mark Mathews’ Late Night Players’ while he has held a residency in India, headlined slots in Australia and New Zealand as well as performing in the American Deep South. Basically the man has attacked his music career with all the vim and vigour of your writer taking down a late night takeaway pizza.
In between tours Mathews busks and on one occasion, along the central line, he had such a large audience that staff had to be called to work as crowd control and whilst in Covent Garden Comedian, Lenny Henry dropped him a large wad of cash and some very supportive words.
Black Heart Down is taken from Mathews’ brand new album The Raging Sea and I have to say that it’s an absolutely fantastic single. I love the melodies that course through the songs veins and its chorus is simply majestic. This is a tune which will be stuck in your head for days whether you like it or not. There’s just something about this man’s voice and the way that he puts his songs together which just makes you want to listen. It’s that unqualifiable spark which you can neither describe nor understand but you know is there.
I really hope that this song and new album (Out now) that I mentioned above really do well because on this evidence Mathews’ certainly deserves that recognition. My ‘ones to watch list’ has just gained a new entry. Give this tune a listen you will not be disappointed.
