Single Review: Lacey – Shadow

I like to think that I’m reasonably on top of what’s hot and what’s not in music circles but I have to admit that I appear to have dropped the ball on this one. Up until about half an hour ago I’d never listened to any music by Nottingham quartet Lacey; what a mistake that was!

If like me you’re useless, here’s a bit of background before I get into the music and the really interesting stuff. Lacey are Graham Turner (Lead vocals/bass) Josh Lewin (Guitar, vocals) Pete Maksymiw (Guitar) and Dave Pearson (Drums). Last year the band released their debut album Under The Brightest Lights which they are going to follow up with a brand new EP called I Don’t Owe The World A Thing on 5th February. Shadow is the band’s new single taken from that forthcoming EP and it is fantastic.

The track sets out to ‘highlight the sentiment that some things are best left behind us’ but instead of just focussing on the loss of what was it also really hammers home the positive aspect. There is that rueful look back of course, but the yell of “But I’m not nothing anymore!” really kicks in the idea that the best may be yet to come. The song just screams defiance. The vocals are huge on this record plain and simple. The chorus then by default is an absolute monster and this track will never be anything less than an absolute anthem. This thing will take the roof off live, of that there is simply no doubt. And speaking of live…

To coincide with the release of the new EP the band are also heading out on the road in support of Bowling For Soup throughout next month.
