Contrary to popular belief, I’m a soft soul at heart and the old romantic in me isn’t buried too far under the surface so when I get this quote about a track I was abound to check it out.
“Smells Like Summer is about being with a girl who makes it feel like summer all year round. It’s describing that inexplicable feel good vibe that summer brings, like a warm ray of sun through dark clouds. It’s also the feel of yearning for the summer season to come (something all Brits can relate to!).”
That quote comes from Ben Taylor, guitarist and provider of backing vocals for The Abstracts who along with bandmates Felix Morgan (Lead vocals, guitar) Ben Nunn (Bass, backing vocals) and Mark Thomson (Drums) have just released their new single Smells Like Summer.
The Cambridge based quartet are regular performers at popular venues both at home and in London while the rest of their musical CV also includes a televised performance, a BBC Introducing session and 2 sold out shows on the main stage at The Cam.
As I mentioned above Smells Like Summer is the band’s new single and what a great nostalgia-inducing slice of indie it is. Vocally, lead singer Morgan gives a firm tip of the hat to a certain Mr Joe Strummer, but the thing which really pulled me in are those melodies. There’s something which I love (Probably a little bit too much) about those classic indie guitar twinkling melodies, they make every track sound like it should be sunny outside.
I’m definitely a fan of this tune, I like the way it’s put together, the sentiment behind it and a very classy solo is the icing on the cake.
You can check the band live at the following dates, but failing that I’d definitely recommend hitting play on the track below.
22 October – Bierkeller, Manchester
24th October- Proud Camden
21st November – Portland Arms, Cambridge
