Single Review: Mabel – Know Me Better

Straight from the top I make no apologies for the fact that I am about to jump on the Mabel bandwagon in a huge way. You know those tunes that just hit you straight from the first listen and remind you why you love music so much? Yeah, this is definitely one of those. I’ll get into the track itself in a minute but first here’s the scoop on the lady behind the music, the aforementioned Mabel.

Born in the mountains of Malaga Mabel has had quite a first 19 years on this Earth. She was raised between Spain and London while also spending 10 years in Stockholm. She began writing songs age 5 inspired by turn of the century R&B from the likes of Destiny’s Child (Even at 26 I feel old, man alive!) and the emotional honesty of jazz which was constantly played around the house. And when your parents are Neneh Cherry and Massive-Attack producer Cameron McVey, music is most definitely in your blood.

Mabel did her best to shield her talents from the world though, refusing to play anyone bar her best friend any of her music until the age of 16. She studied production and music theory at college in Sweden until late last year when the family returned to London. Know Me Better is her debut single and it is a stunner.

I’m not sure there are words to do justice as to how smooth this tune is. The production is just laid right back and with a cool little Mos Def vocal sample lets Mabel weave her magic. Written about not judging a book by its cover and the deeper understanding you gain after letting your guard down in a relationship the song simply delivers. I don’t know what the magic ‘it’ is that makes some artists stand out but this girl has got it in spades.

Know Me Better is already being supported everywhere you look but you can’t help but feel that this is just the beginning. It’s smooth; it’s silky and just glides from your speakers.

I have little doubt that bigger things await for Mabel but my God she’s going to be hard pressed to top this.
