This track has been a bit of a strange one to write about. I say that because after reading the promo and before hitting play on the music I thought I was going to hate it. That may sound quick to judge and a bit harsh and that’s because it is, but I’m just being honest.
The reason for this snap judgement is that much of the music which is described the way that this track was is usually massively pretentious and pretty thin on substance. However, not for the first time in my life I was massively wrong. I love this tune.
French native Velour Modular aka Annabelle Guilhem first emerged onto the scene in 2013 with an EP titled Capsule. Now that’s not a record that I’ve heard but based on this new track I think I’m going to have to go and dig it out.
The Shields once again finds Guilhem teaming with Berlin based producer Phon.o and the results are mesmerizing. I could try and explain what the song is about myself but I think that it’s chief creator Guilhem could probably do a much better job ,so here’s what she had to say;
“I tried to reveal the mechanisms that can appear in reaction to love. Having “feelings” for someone or ourselves may not be obvious to handle. Exposing and accepting vulnerability is probably the hardest thing to do. That’s what I tried to write about. Shields is about rejection.”
I don’t know if it’s the way that the vocal glides across the throbbing bassline or what but there’s something strangely hypnotic about The Shields. Everything about the track is crisp and clean, I also love that it’s got a strong melodic vibe running straight through the heart of it. You can get so lost in this tune you might never find your way out.
The Shields is a track which has proved me massively wrong, and I love it for that. There’s a kind of dreaminess to it, but at the same time it’s beautifully melodic while the vocal from Guilhem is simply enchanting.
I get the feeling that this singer/producer combination have got the skills to produce seriously big things in the future and I for one can’t wait to hear them.
