Single Review: The Spitfires – 4am

The only thing that has disappointed me about reviewing this tune is that I didn’t discover the band sooner! I’m not in the position of making predictions but I would be amazed if this track and upcoming debut album didn’t do really good things for these guys.

Hailing from Watford The Spitfires are Billy Sullivan (Vocals, guitar) Chris Chanell (Keyboard, vocals) Sam Long (Bass, vocals) and Matt Johnson. (Drums) The band has been kicking around in one form or another since2012 but right now in 2015 they are on one hell of a run.

4am is the 2nd single to be taken from the band’s debut album Response which is set for release on 21st August and it is a cracker. It’s also worth mentioning that you’ll be able to read a review of said album right here. The thing I love about this track apart from the dancing bassline, snappy melody and the fact that it gives me flashbacks to The Jam and a great reminder of The Twang is that it’s just real life. As frontman and chief songwriter Sullivan explains;

“4AM was one of the later tracks to be written for the album. It’s just about being skint and how it makes general living a struggle. Your girlfriend thinks she deserves better than you, the landlord’s driving you mad because you haven’t paid the rent and in the end you lay awake at night thinking about it. Lyrically I’m not trying to be sophisticated or particularly clever – just painting a picture of mundane life.”

As a regular working class guy from the Black Country 4am describes life. It’s what I have experienced, it’s what I see around me and it’s real. I loved The Streets, The Twang and the Arctic Monkeys for that exact same reason. It feels like The Spitfires are ‘one of us’ and they are out there making our case.

I love pretty much everything about this song and I like what this band are about, I like what they’re trying to do. 2015 is shaping up to be a bit year for The Spitfires and I’m massively looking forward to reporting on it for you. Great track, great band. Simple.

4am is officially released 14th August.
