Single Review: Du Blonde – Hunter

“Beth Jeans Houghton was born in Transylvania to a pack of albino wolves who raised her on chewing tobacco and stuffed clams. Despite they’re hospitality, love conquers all and she soon eloped to scotch corner with her shiny new stallion peter Andre.”

Despite the above her press pack claims that Houghton aka Du Blonde was born in Newcastle but frankly I’m not going to argue with the woman herself… Transylvania and albino wolves it is.

Well now I’ve cleared up that vital piece of information let’s get down to business. Hunter is the second single to be taken from Houghton’s upcoming album Welcome Back To Milk which is released 18th May. The album is technically her 2nd full length LP but is the 1st under the guise of Du Blonde, which Houghton feels gives her the chance to create more personal music;

“I can be Du Blonde on stage, singing my diary, then go home. It’s easier to compartmentalise it like that.”

I reckon this track might split you down the middle but I’m a big fan. It just feels like such a throwback and manages to be grandiose and epic despite being only a shade over 3 minutes long. Despite its epic nature the main thing that really drew me to the song is its simplicity. You’ve got your vocal harmonies and what not but in general the whole thing is pretty sparse, it’s all about the vocal and the lyrics. The reason behind this probably lies with the fact that by her own admission Houghton pulled inspiration from 2 of the all-time greats;

“It was one of those songs that just kind of pours out, it wasn’t hard to write. I was listening to a lot of Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin at the time and I was really into their way of putting a lot of honesty and emotion into their songs.”

To cut a long story short I’m a big fan of this track, its swirling hypnotic nature pulls you in without you even realising what is happening. I like the vocal a lot, there are no games; it’s just as pure as they come. Hunter is a beautifully balanced piece of music that just delivers again and again.

Du Blonde will be heading out on a UK tour next month, all of the dates are listed below and tickets are on sale now.
