What do you get when you mix a little bit of Brit-pop, with a pinch of Arctic Monkeys and a sprinkling of Kasabian? The answer ladies and gentlemen is The Phantoms.
Hailing from Scotland, Broxburn West Lothian to be precise, The Phantoms are Colin Simpson (Vocals, rhythm guitar) Colin Mckillop (Lead guitar) Peter Stewart (Bass, backing vocals) and Blair Cullen. (Drums) The band formed in March 2012 and have steadily risen through the ranks getting some good airplay north of the boarder as well as supporting the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen who seem to be everywhere at the minute.
I would describe this latest offering Wasting Time as Brit-pop’s slightly grimier and dirtier cousin. It’s got the Brit-pop anthemic refrain which will get stuck in your head, in this case ‘Where do we go? Nobody knows’ but at the same time it has a bit of a grittier side to it. It’s basically Oasis dragged through a hedge backwards and washed off in a dirty puddle. And that my friends, is what makes it brilliant. I’m fed up of hearing records that sound too clean, Wasting Time has got an edge and I love that.
Tunes like this one need a strong vocal and Simpson certainly delivers one. It’s a track that will stand out from the pack and if you hear it on the radio it’s going to be in year head for the rest of the day without fail.
Personally I think it’s just a great little tune from great up and coming band, check the video below and judge for yourselves.
Wasting Time is out now.
