There can’t be too many indie bands out there with a hip hop background but I seem to have found one.
Based in Bristol and coming off the back of their critically acclaimed EP ‘Tell Em Lies’ Three Kings High are Joe Eden (Vocals) Samuel Otis (Vocals, guitar) Elo Coliou (Vocals) Vee Kay (Producer, engineer, keys, MPC) Luke Wookash (Drums) and Rowan Ensoll (Bass)
Bristol is renowned for being incredibly musically diverse with one sound never dominating and that musical blend can heard in this track Nothing Left To Lose. You can probably hear hip hop, indie and pop running through the DNA of this one and the song is all the better for it. The hip hop link in particular shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as the band have supported legendary group The Pharcyde in the past. For someone who loves hip hop as much as me, this is a very big deal.
As far as this track is concerned it’s just a great single. It has a solid hook and the harmonies and melodies make it a really smooth listen. Lyrically in places it treads a similar path to Paolo Nutini’s ‘Pencil Full Of Lead’ but the delivery has its own twist. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is but there’s just something infectious about this track, it’s one of those that just makes you smile.
I must confess that I hadn’t really heard of these guys before getting my hands on this track but I’m now off to get better acquainted. There could be something very special brewing here and I really don’t want to miss it.
Nothing Left To Lose is a fantastic little record, it’s a glorious slice of indie-pop but not quite as you know it.
